How memfor compares. Including where others are the better choice.

Rules for this page: every cell is dated and links to its source, and a cell we couldn't source says "Not checked". The benchmark headlines use different metrics, so they're shown for reference and never ranked. If something here is wrong, tell us and we'll fix it in public.

Capability table
System Who writes memoryWhere it livesRetrievalHosted optionLicenceSelf-reported headline (different metrics, not comparable) Checked
agentware Your agent proposes; a validating CLI writes learnings and is the only writer of the index Plain files in your folder BM25 by default; opt-in hybrid No (planned) Apache-2.0 Recall@5 0.914 (fractional retrieval, 470 questions)
Mem0 LLM extraction Managed platform or self-hosted SDK Managed API Yes Apache-2.0 (SDK) 94.4 shown on site; metric not named
Zep / Graphiti LLM-built temporal knowledge graph Zep Cloud; Graphiti self-hosted Graph + search Yes Apache-2.0 (Graphiti) 90.2% answer accuracy (gpt-5.4 judge)
Letta The agent edits its own memory files Git-backed memory files Agent-driven Yes Apache-2.0 None published for LongMemEval-S retrieval
supermemory API extracts and stores Managed Hybrid Yes MIT 97% judged answer accuracy (Recall@20 setting)
Cognee Pipeline builds graph + vectors Self-hosted or cloud Graph + vector Yes Apache-2.0 None on LongMemEval-S retrieval
agentmemory Hooks capture; LLM-free by default Local BM25 + local embeddings No Apache-2.0 recall_any@5 95.2% hybrid / 86.2% BM25 (500 q)
MemPalace Verbatim storage Local (ChromaDB) Vector No MIT R@5 96.6% raw (500 q; reportedly recall_any@5)
Claude Code auto memory Claude writes MEMORY.md One machine MEMORY.md index loaded at start (first 200 lines / 25 KB); topic files read on demand n/a n/a n/a

The table's last column is a reference list, not a ranking: Recall@5 (fractional retrieval), recall_any@5 and answer accuracy measure different things. The like-for-like comparison is the same-scorer run, which hasn't been done yet.

Where they're stronger.

  • Adoption. Every system above has a much larger community than agentware.
  • Knowledge-graph multi-hop. Zep/Graphiti and Cognee build graphs. We don't.
  • Compliance. Mem0 and Zep publish SOC 2 and HIPAA programmes. We have no hosted service and no certifications.
  • Managed hosting. Mem0, Zep, Letta and supermemory run it for you today.
  • Raw recall_any@5. agentmemory and MemPalace report higher LongMemEval-S numbers under that definition.

Choose them if…

  • Mem0, if you want a managed memory API with compliance paperwork today.

  • Zep, if you need temporal knowledge-graph context with SOC 2 Type II and an EU DPA.

  • Letta, if you want a full agent harness whose memory lives in git.

  • agentmemory, if you want hybrid BM25 plus embedding recall through hooks and MCP today.

  • Claude Code auto memory, if you're one developer on one machine and happy with notes Claude writes for itself.

  • agentware, if you want memory you can diff, benchmark and reproduce, on top of the agent you already use.
